Health and Care Research Wales: Wales Gene Park
Type of organisation: Academic
Wales Gene Park (WGP) is funded by Welsh Government through Health and Care Research Wales to support Genetic/Genomic Research that benefits patients and the public in Wales.
WGP comprises genomic technologists, bioinformaticians, and education/engagement practitioners to support research – academic and commercial – through collaboration.
Sequencing – WGP facilitates Next Generation Sequencing for many applications, providing library preparation and quality assessment of samples (DNA – whole genome, whole exome, clinical exome, targeted panels; RNA – whole transcriptome, microRNA, low-input RNA) when needed.
Bioinformatics – Generating data is the first stage of any ‘omic’ experiment. Data handling and analysis are critical. With experience handling a range of data types, WGP enables bespoke analysis alongside researchers.
Genome editing – WGP can establish and edit human induced pluripotent stem cells and mouse embryonic stem cells, thereby generating vital tools for modelling genetic diseases used for the assessment and development of new treatments and therapies.
Education, Engagement and Patient Involvement – WGP has extensive experience delivering high quality programmes across a broad range of audiences (patients, public, professionals and schools/colleges), providing support for public and patient involvement in research (particularly with the Rare Disease Community), development and delivery of research engagement projects, and community outreach programmes.
