SUMMARY:ehi2 seminar:
DESCRIPTION:With the phenomenal rise of mobile devices (mobile & smart phones) globally is bringing a change that is impacting our world in every way – how we interact\, play\, read\, write\, watch\, study\, research\, work or even relax. \nTraditional methods of doing research\, developing solutions and subsequent utilization by end-users in this information & digital age  is also seeing a change that is rapidly adapting/adopting to this wave. \nIn this talk\, Chris Lynton-Moll\, CEO of CAL2CAL Corporation\, Australia\, will walk through case studies and implementation experiences from around the globe (Australia\, India\, UK\, USA). The examples will demonstrate how problems of today’s information society and the needs of data and knowledge intense heterogeneous applications are being met by mobile solutions that were in the cradle of research till recently. A successful industry-academic partnership is key to many of these solutions. Such applications are showing the direction to new issues that may be solved by future research and development work.\n \nThis seminar is being held as part of the ehi2 seminar series run in collaboration with CHIRAL. Dr. Thierry Maffeis will show how Swansea’s new SEM facility can be used to obtain superb high definition images of anything from polymers and composites to micro and nano machines and devices to biological tissues and cells. Dr. Maffies will cover a broad range of industrial applications for SEM such as surface chemical analysis of metals and ceramics\, imaging of surface structures\, failure analysis from imaging of defects\, and many more. \nDr. Peter Dunstan will describe scanning probe microscopy systems that can reveal detailed 3-D topography of surfaces from the micron to nanoscale.  The systems he will describe can be used on metallic\, semiconducting and insulating materials.  He will also discuss the centre’s state-of-the-art instrumentation that allows these scanning probe systems to be used in conjunction with optical spectroscopy analysis\, namely fluorescence and Raman spectroscopy.  He will focus on the technique of Raman spectroscopy for complementary chemical and structural analysis.   Rapid acquisition techniques to nanoscale analysis will be highlighted.  Industrial applications will focus on nano-structures\, such as carbon nanotubes. \nDetails of biological Raman spectroscopy will also be presented. \nProf. Huw Summers will describe how micro and nano-fabrication techniques can be used to build tiny devices and machines for applications in electronic devices\, sensors\, micro fluidics (lab-on-chip)\,  telecommunications\, solar cells\,  automotive and aerospace.
